About Me

The strange a in my name is a Polish letter that is pronounced a bit like the French en. I’m a PhD candidate in AI with a passion for science communication, and I live and work in the historic town of Leiden in the Netherlands.

My PhD is shared between the Leiden Institute for Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), the SRON Netherlands Center for Space Research and ESA Φ-lab. I’m interested in learning how we can automatically create ML pipelines that work for real-life applications like the methane plume detections created at SRON.

My work is about translation, like translating properties of EO problems into ML problem statements and explaining abstract ML concepts to EO practitioners. I also translate my science to the general public to make AI understandable and inspire them with applications impacting our environment.

I’m an interdisciplinary researcher fascinated by comparing and learning from different perspectives. This pattern continues in my personal life, where I continually try to make sense of the different worldviews and cultures in my mixed European family.

When not doing research or writing, I read books, wrestle with my dog on the floor or go to the gym. I love learning about design, from traditional art to interactive data visualisations. I dream of writing a book someday (though I don’t know yet if it will be literary fiction or non-fiction like PopScience).
